1988 Video: Lynda Barry on LATE NIGHT WITH DAVID LETTERMAN

It's Lynda Barry, who, in this clip from 1988, is back for a return visit on LATE NIGHT WITH DAVID LETTERMAN promoting her new book THE FUN HOUSE from Harper Perennial. (All of her great paperback collections from the late 1980s and 90s are now out of print, but I have heard there are plans to reprint.)

Nice to see this clip via dpallen, but I have to wonder if there are any cartoonists who have appeared on late night network TV shows recently? Sure, Johnny used to have Cathy Guisewite and Charles Schulz on THE TONIGHT SHOW, but are any of today's cartoonist superstars on national TV, asking the people to buy their book of comics? Would any producer think of having the Hernandez Brothers promoting LOVE AND ROCKETS #4 or have Sergio Aragones come and draw, live, on the show, and promote his new issue of SERGIO ARAGONES FUNNIES from Bongo Comics? How about Andrew Farago & Shaenon Garrity on Chelsea Lately or Geoff Johns talking to Conan about the DC52 relaunch or Joe Farris on Jimmy Kimmel promoting his new book A SOLDIER'S SKETCHBOOK?

And me? I would do Craig Ferguson's show any time! "Buy me comics, Craig!"

Harvey Pekar used to be on a lot too. Not only are cartoonists not on talk shows anymore, authors hardly are in general. Years ago I met Conan O'Brien and he was lamenting that he had Don Martin on his first month but could never have anyone like that now.
