Tom Batiuk: 40 Years of FUNKY WINKERBEAN

FUNKY WINKERBEAN creator Tom Batiuk is interviewed by The Plain Dealer's Michael Heaton upon the occasion of the comic strip's 40th anniversary. The feature will be collected in a projected 14 book series from Black Squirrel Press titled THE COMPLETE FUNKY WINKERBEAN.

A couple of highlights from the interview:

To what do you attribute your stamina?
Coal miners need stamina, Michael. Cartoonists just need to show up every day.

Is there one story line that stands out in your mind?
That would be "Lisa's Story." I sometimes will go back and read that book and wonder who wrote it.
What new cartoonist do you read and enjoy? If I had to pick one cartoonist whose work I would take with me to a desert island (how can it be an island and a desert anyway?), it would be anything by Gregory Gallant, or, to use his pretentious name, Seth.
